After what seems like an eternity of waiting, Blastoise has finally made its way into Pokémon Unite. Unfortunately, the last Kanto starter isn’t available to try via the free weekly rotation, and will set you back either 8,000 Aeos Coins or 460 Aeos Gems. That said, if you want to check it out before committing to paying for the unlock, you can always take it for a spin in the Practice Area if you don’t want to wait for the free rotation.

Blastoise is characterized as an intermediate-level ranged Defender (same as Slowbro), making it the first post-launch Pokémon to be added in this role. Blastoise’s passive ability, Torrent, raises its Attack and Special Attack when below half health. Its Unite Move is called Hydro Typhoon and attacks enemy Pokémon in a large area, simultaneously throwing them and granting you a shield.
Out of all the new characters so far, I’m most excited for Blastoise as I tend to play Defenders when possible. For those disappointed by this addition, however, don’t worry—Mamoswine and Sylveon were recently announced to be coming to the roster, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of characters even beyond those releases, especially with the release of Pokémon Unite‘s mobile version coming later this month.
