Blackwind release date set for January 2022 for sci-fi hack-and-slashing

Nintendo Switch Blackwind release date January 20, 2022 Drakkar Dev Blowfish Studios sci-fi hack and slash arcade game with skill trees and giant robot AI Battle Frame

Publisher Blowfish Studios and developer Drakkar Dev have announced a January 20, 2022 digital release date for sci-fi hack-and-slash platformer Blackwind on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC via Steam and GOG, and Mac App Store. Physical versions will land in Europe a day later, and they will arrive in North America at a time afterward to be determined. A Blackwind release date trailer shows off what you can expect from the game, which has a strong arcade action vibe.

The premise of the game is that protagonist James Hawkins stumbles upon his father’s “revolutionary battle mech prototype” with a sophisticated AI, and he finds it with perfect timing because he has to repel an invasion of ruthless aliens called the Raknos, which are trying to annihilate the mining colony planet Medusa-42. You will wage war across multiple different environments like deserts and mountains, and you have the option of local co-op where one player controls the Battle Frame (giant robot) and the other player uses an “agile Drone” to fight. Blackwind contains three difficulty levels, and the game isn’t just mindless action, as there are three Battle Frame skill trees with “dozens of upgrades and abilities.”

Here is some more of what Blackwind will entail upon its January release date on Nintendo Switch and other platforms:

Hack-and-slash through dynamic isometric locations with energy blades, blasters, missiles, mines, and grenades to clear out the barbarous alien threat. Solve brain-teasing environmental puzzles while leaping and grappling around obstacles and adversaries. Rip through the hordes of Raknos bipeds, spiders, drones, swarms, and other dangerous forms with a wide range of melee and ranged attacks. Unleash devastating blows with brutal termination finishers before moving on to the next foe.

Blackwind will retail for $19.99 / £12.99 / €15.99 with support for English, Italian, French, Spanish, and German language options, though I get the feeling most people will not need to understand the story in order to enjoy the experience. And if you’re in the mood for more sci-fi on Switch, check out Zelda-on-a-time-limit game Unsighted.
