Yesterday, we discussed the most anticipated Nintendo Switch games announced to be arriving in 2022. But today, we’re traveling to parts unknown. We’re going to grab all our salt shakers and head to rumor country, to discuss the biggest rumored games that have been alleged to be coming to Nintendo Switch, whether in 2022 or beyond. To be clear, there is absolutely no guarantee that these games are real and will come to Switch, but for the sake of fun and optimism, we’re going to take a look at the most credible rumors and reports.
Rumor country: The biggest, most credible games rumored for Nintendo Switch in 2022 and beyond
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
It’s almost guaranteed that a new Xenoblade Chronicles game is in development at Monolith Soft, both because of financial common sense and because the voice actor for Melia accidentally implied it exists. Furthermore, a report came out after the voice actor leak claiming that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is not only quite late into its development, but it is tentatively planned for a release in the first half of 2022 (COVID complications notwithstanding).
This game will reportedly take place in a potentially distant future and tie up loose ends from the two previous (non-X) games, even bringing back some old characters (likely including Melia). Of all the biggest rumored Nintendo Switch games for 2022 and beyond, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 seems like the surest thing to be more than just a rumor.
Metroid Prime 1 remaster or remake
There is a weirdly long story behind this particular Switch game rumor, but we’ll just give you the most current claims. Either a remaster or a remake of Metroid Prime 1 for Nintendo Switch is claimed to be finished with development, and Retro Studios (which made the whole trilogy and is currently developing Metroid Prime 4) is believed to be the developer. The tools used for its development may or may not be used to create similar remasters or remakes of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and 3: Corruption. If the game both genuinely exists and is complete, then a 2022 launch for this major rumored Switch game seems likely — unless Nintendo chooses to hold it till closer to the launch of Metroid Prime 4.
New Donkey Kong
Way back in May 2021, reports and rumors cropped up that a new Donkey Kong game is in development for Switch internally at Nintendo. If true, that is quite the change of pace, since the likes of Rare and Retro Studios have been developing mainline releases for decades now. Reports suggest the game will be a 2.5D title though, which would put it in line with the recent Retro titles, as opposed to the more open-ended 3D nature of Donkey Kong 64 from Rare. Meanwhile, there is also a rumor that a Donkey Kong animated project of some sort is in the works, which would make sense since Nintendo doesn’t plan to stop after its Super Mario movie.
Fire Emblem remake
It’s almost guaranteed that developer Intelligent Systems is working on a new Fire Emblem game of some kind for Switch right now, but speculation has gotten particularly intense that its next game will be a remake. Leaker Zippo claims the next Fire Emblem game will be a remake too — and that development is even nearing completion. Which game exactly is being remade is unknown though. But as is the case with all of these rumored Switch games, it’s obviously important to reiterate that nothing has been confirmed.
Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden
Leaker Zippo strikes again here, claiming that Atlus’ Persona 3 Portable will receive a multiplatform remaster and that Persona 4 Golden will come to consoles as well, specifically including Nintendo Switch. Previously, the leaker correctly predicted the remaster of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the return of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and & Knuckles, and that MercurySteam had finished a new Metroid game (Metroid Dread). So, while this is far from a slam dunk, the fact that Atlus is already planning lots of big things for the 25th anniversary of Persona makes these rumored Switch games pretty likely to be legitimate, whether or not they both arrive in 2022.
Resident Evil Switch game of some kind
This is where the Switch game rumors break down and the car gets stuck in a dense swamp. Once upon a time, there was a rumor that Capcom was making a game vaguely treated as a Resident Evil Revelations 3, with Nintendo Switch as its major targeted platform. Rebecca Chambers is allegedly a protagonist. The rumor then developed that the game had been given a title of Resident Evil Outrage and that it is running on RE Engine. However, a different leaker recently claimed that Resident Evil Outrage was actually the name of a separate multiplayer game that has been canceled, but he added a Switch Resident Evil project of indeterminate status does exist.
So what do we take away from this? Well, frankly, it’s hard to take anything at all since the details have become incomprehensible. All we can do is maintain some vague hope that maybe Capcom is developing a new Resident Evil game with Nintendo Switch as its core platform. This is definitely the most questionable of the big rumored Nintendo Switch games for 2022 and beyond.
Your throat must be pretty dry after chugging all that salt, but it’s been a fun ride, right? Let us know what you think of these big Switch game rumors for 2022 and beyond — and which rumored games you think are most likely to be legitimate!
