The video game modding community is absolutely killing it lately! Recently, we’ve reported on tons of fantastic fan creations. Thanks to mods, you can play Super Smash Bros. inside of Overwatch or experience Super Mario Odyssey in a Nintendo 64 style. You can even settle it in Smash as Scooby-Doo’s Shaggy. Today, we’ve got another mod to share, and it should be a treat for fans of classic platformers. Modder Mark Kurko has recreated the first level of Donkey Kong Country in Banjo-Kazooie. It’s time to get Jiggies in Jungle Hijinx!
This is a crossover that just makes perfect sense. Although one game is 2D and the other is 3D, they’re both beloved Rare platformers. To compensate for this, the mod pulls the camera back and keeps you moving left to right. It’s still technically a 3D game, but the illusion is pretty convincing. Besides, Donkey Kong Country used cutting-edge tech to render the characters in 3D. That was a pretty huge deal for a Super Nintendo game in 1994! Upgrading to Banjo-Kazooie‘s more fully 3D graphics is a logical next step. You can check out the results by clicking the video below.
Banjo-Kazooie meets Donkey Kong Country
If you’re interested in trying out this mod for yourself, just click through to the YouTube description. Kurko has provided download links in both English and Spanish. The first level is fully finished and playable right now. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Kurko is planning more levels. However, he has other mods that may be worth your time. Notably, he’s also making a crossover between Banjo-Kazooie and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
