What’s the best retro game you played this year?

Banjo-Kazooie

2019 had more than its fair share of great new releases, but many of us have backlogs that constantly call for blowing the dust off of our old consoles and embarking on deep trips with the Ghost of Gaming Past. If you revisited any old games or systems this year, which retro title highlighted your experience?

I spent some time clearing out my N64 backlog this year, beating Banjo-KazooieDiddy Kong Racing, and Donkey Kong 64Banjo-Kazooie was my favorite by far and is pretty easily one of the best games I have ever played. The neatly-packed worlds are each loaded to the brim with personality, charm, and their own rosters of secrets and treasures. Exploration of this caliber is a rewarding experience that sadly has not reappeared en masse since its inception in the Nintendo 64 era. Banjo-Kazooie is a truly timeless classic, which means that even late arrivals such as myself have a lot to enjoy.

What was the best retro game you played in 2019? It could be something you tried for the first time, a replay of one of your favorite games, or something that did not even involve the original hardware–perhaps even something like a Final Fantasy port on Switch that you never had the chance to try out before this year. Whatever your choice is, join us in a walk down memory lane by sharing your pick in the comments.
