It’s almost January, which means one thing for the speedrunning community—the return of another Games Done Quick marathon! This Sunday, Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 kicks off an entire week of speedrunning all in the name of charity! As in past AGDQ events, donations will benefit the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Currently, Games Done Quick has donated over $28 million to various causes since their first event in 2010.
Similarly to last summer’s Summer Games Done Quick 2020, AGDQ 2021 will be held entirely online for safety reasons as the coronavirus pandemic rages on. One benefit of the shift to an online marathon is the ability to showcase runs that wouldn’t otherwise be able to be shown due to runners not being able to travel or due to equipment restrictions, such as SGDQ 2020’s outstanding Pump It Up! showcase by happyf333tz.
This year, there are a number of great Nintendo runs to check out. Sunday features runs of Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, and Metroid: Zero Mission, while later in the week, you’ll find runs of classic titles such as Pokemon Blue version and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In a special, one time only showcase, there’s even going to be a four-way Super Mario Bros. 35 battle showcase on Saturday night! If non-Nintendo games are more your speed, AGDQ 2021 has plenty of those to check out as well!
Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 kicks off their pre-show over on their Twitch channel starting at 11:30am Eastern, this Sunday, January 3rd. The full schedule for the event can be found here, but as always, don’t take this as being set in stone. If you’re interested in anything specific (especially if it’s later in the week), I highly encourage you to check in on the schedule often, as things have been known to shift by a few hours in either direction!
