Auto Chess, the progenitor of the genre, comes to Switch in 2020

Auto Chess Switch Drodo Studio Dragonest 2020

Dragonest CEO Loring Lee revealed in Tokyo that Auto Chess from Drodo Studio will come to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2020. For fans of the game, that’s all you need to know. But for everyone else, let’s talk about what this strangely named game is.

At the start of this year, developer Drodo Studio released a mod for Dota 2 on PC called Dota Auto Chess. True to its name, the mod was a mixture of Dota 2 and chess, and the concept quickly caught on, inspiring numerous imitators of varying quality. This new game genre is described as the “auto battler,” though some just prefer to describe any game of this ilk as “auto chess.”

In any case, when Valve and Drodo couldn’t come to an agreement on how to collaborate in an official capacity, the two companies went their separate ways. Valve created its own official auto battler called Dota Underlords while Drodo is developing a standalone Auto Chess, in beta for PC and mobile devices. And amid all this, both auto battlers face fierce competition from League of Legends‘ own in-game auto battler mode called Teamfight Tactics.

If you’ve yet to try out the new auto battler genre, perhaps Auto Chess for Switch can be your gateway next year. And for more news about the world of PC and Switch gaming intersecting, check out the possibility of Baldur’s Gate 3 someday (maybe) coming to Switch.
