Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a genuine phenomenon with its popularity around the world, from the United States to even China, where the game is banned despite its not even formally releasing there. Following that trend, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that the game is also a big hit in South Korea. One of the ways it generated hype in South Korea was an Animal Crossing: New Horizons TV ad featuring K-pop idol Jeon Somi, formerly of massively popular group I.O.I. and now a solo artist under YG subsidiary label The Black Label.
The TV ad is of course in Korean, though Jeon Somi herself was born in Canada and could do the whole commercial in English if you asked her nicely.
Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad has described New Horizons as “extremely popular” in South Korea, with huge lines forming back in March to preorder the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch. (Korea is not under quarantine because it responded to COVID-19 much sooner and more effectively than the United States.)
Even with the COVID-19 situation in Korea, many people lined up to pre order the Animal Crossing LE Switch console this week.

It’s not very often that I get the chance to write about K-pop around here, so the magic of Animal Crossing is truly indisputable at this point. For the heck of it, here is Jeon Somi’s most recent song. Personally, I’m not a fan of it, but I’ll take literally any opportunity I can to spam people with K-pop.
