Animal Crossing: New Horizons nominated for GOTY at The Game Awards

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Game of the Year The Game Awards 2020

The Game Awards has just revealed all of its 2020 nominations across a bunch of different categories. All of the big games you’d expect are present, and as Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been Nintendo’s biggest game of the year, it shows up multiple times. The big one though is that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is up for the Game of the Year award.

New Horizons faces some tough competition though. It’s up against Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, and The Last Of Us Part II. Typically, I’d say that something like The Last of Us Part II or Final Fantasy VII Remake would be more likely to win, but 2020 is a little different.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons took the world by storm during a global pandemic. It’s on track to become Nintendo Switch’s bestselling game and has smashed previous series records. Couple that with the fact that The Last of Us Part II was divisive and Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t even the full thing, and New Horizons has a real chance. Oh, and it’s a brilliant game in its own right.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also up for nomination for Best Multiplayer game and Best Family game at The Game Awards, both of which it’s definitely in contention for. For the Best Family game category, it goes up against two other Nintendo titles: Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Paper Mario: The Origami King, in addition to Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and Minecraft Dungeons.

Otherwise, nominations this year were quite light for Nintendo Switch exclusives — no Xenoblade Chronicles in sight.

Do you think Animal Crossing: New Horizons deserves to be Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020? You can vote for your choices now.
