Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween guide: How to get Spooky items and more

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween guide: How to get Spooky items, pumpkin starts, candy, lollipops

It’s Halloween season in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which means your island is probably gearing up for some spooky fun! This Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween guide will help you with the new Halloween-themed items (and DIY recipes) to be found during your island’s celebration, as well as provide a go-to source for all things pumpkin! You’ll need pumpkins in order to craft the Spooky DIYs, so make sure you know what you need to make your island a fun fright fest.

How to grow pumpkins in New Horizons for Halloween

First, let’s talk about pumpkins! Pumpkins in Animal Crossing: New Horizons work just like flowers — plant the pumpkin starts, water them a couple of times a day, and within three days you’ll have a fresh pumpkin patch to harvest. Each pumpkin start yields one-to-three pumpkins depending on how many days you watered them and can produce one of four colors: orange, white, green, and yellow. The color of a pumpkin is random, though orange seems to be the most common of the four.

Once the pumpkins have sprouted, they can be picked and used to craft the Spooky set of items, which includes the following:

  • Spooky Arch
  • Spooky Candy Set
  • Spooky Chair
  • Spooky Lantern
  • Spooky Lantern Set
  • Spooky Scarecrow
  • Spooky Standing Lamp
  • Spooky Table
  • Spooky Tower

The full DIY recipes for each item can be found further below.

Acquiring candy and lollipops for exclusive Spooky and Jack items

Meanwhile, as you’ve been shopping at Nook’s Cranny for the pumpkin starts, you may have noticed Timmy and Tommy are now also selling candy along with the pumpkin starts. These sweet treats are purchased one at a time, each one costing 120 Bells. Strangely you can only buy one piece of candy per day, meaning at most you’ll have a small handful in your inventory between now and Oct. 31.

On Halloween starting at 5 p.m., the “Czar of Halloween” Jack will appear in front of the Resident Services building looking for a helper. Speak to him to volunteer, then give him a piece of your candy. He’ll bestow a gift upon you, and then trick-or-treating in Animal Crossing: New Horizons will begin!

Each of your fellow island dwellers will now be dressed in costume looking for some candy, and they’ll run toward you as soon as they see you. Give them candy and they will give you an item from the Spooky set, although now there are a few additions only available during trick-or-treating:

  • Spooky Flooring
  • Spooky Garland
  • Spooky Rug
  • Spooky Table Setting
  • Spooky Wall

Outside of the Halloween-exclusive items, if you haven’t received all of these items or their DIY recipes before Halloween, this is a great way to catch up.

However, sometimes you may receive a lollipop instead of a Spooky item. Lollipops are a special piece of candy that just so happen to be a certain Czar’s favorite. Bring the lollipop to Jack, and you’ll receive a special item!

Here’s the full list of items Jack will give you and how to get them:

  • Jack’s Face mask and Haunt Reaction (after the first piece of candy)
  • Jack’s Robe outfit and 10x Orange Pumpkins (after two pieces of candy)
  • Spooky Carriage (after the first lollipop)
  • Spooky Carriage recipe (after the second lollipop)
  • Spooky Wand recipe (after the third lollipop)

Keep trick-or-treating with your island buddies to gain more lollipops and complete the Spooky set in Animal Crossing: New Horizons this Halloween!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween Spooky item crafting guide

Finally, here’s a guide with a full list of the Spooky item set for Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween and what’s needed to craft each item if you want to get a head start on decorating your island for the holiday. Note that all of these items are also featured in Nook’s Cranny, one item per day, after the store’s been upgraded. Purchase prices are in parentheses next to the items below. Keep checking back with Timmy and Tommy to see what’s available!

This cute setup includes a pumpkin-themed bucket filled with sweets and a candied apple, perfect for the Halloween holiday.

Spooky Carriage (only available as a gift from Jack on Halloween)

  • 30 Orange Pumpkin
  • 10 Iron Nuggets
  • 20 Hardwood
  • 20 Softwood
  • 20 Wood

While you can’t ride in this pumpkin carriage Cinderella-style, it does make for a great piece of decoration for any fall-themed display.

Spooky Chair (5,000 Bells)

  • 3 Orange Pumpkins
  • 3 Softwood

“Spooky” might not be the right description for this little pumpkin chair, so don’t be scared to sit on it!

Spooky Fence (Recipe only found in message bottles, balloon presents, and villagers crafting)

  • 3 Orange Pumpkins
  • 5 Iron Nuggets

This creepy fencing is cool, but note that it cannot be purchased from the shop. Scour your whole island for the recipe!

Spooky Garland (only obtained by giving villagers candy on Halloween)

  • 1 Orange Pumpkin
  • 1 Clay
  • 1 Iron Nugget

While you can only get this garland from trick-or-treaters around the island, crafting it is thankfully not that difficult. Hang it up as soon as you get it!

Spooky Lantern (5,600 Bells)

  • 4 Orange Pumpkins

The simplest of the spooky recipes, only four Orange Pumpkins are needed to put this on your front lawn this Halloween in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Spooky Lantern Set (5,900 Bells)

  • 4 Orange Pumpkins
  • 4 Clumps of Weeds

If you’re not content with just the lantern, add four Clumps of Weeds to the mix and now you have a second pumpkin and a hay bale to liven up the decorations.

Spooky Scarecrow (5,200 Bells)

  • 3 Orange Pumpkins
  • 4 Wood

What would Halloween be without a scarecrow in the middle of your garden? Good thing there aren’t any crow villagers…

Spooky Standing Lamp (5,800 Bells)

  • 3 Orange Pumpkins
  • 1 Clay
  • 5 Hardwood

Light the path for the trick-or-treaters on your island with this creepy-looking lamp.

Spooky Table (22,000 Bells)

  • 14 Orange Pumpkins
  • 10 Softwood

This is the perfect table for the true pumpkin aficionado, although making it comes at a steep price. Start growing those pumpkins now if you want this in your home!

Spooky Table Setting (only obtained by giving villagers candy on Halloween)

  • 1 Orange Pumpkin
  • 1 Clay
  • 1 Iron Nugget

If you’re going to have the Spooky Table, you need the right setting for all of your guests. Trick-or-treating is the only way to get this, so stock up on candy while you can!

Spooky Tower (9,800 Bells)

  • 7 Orange Pumpkins

Strange that seven pumpkins are required to create a tower of three; where do those other four go? That’s the truly spooky thought…

Spooky Wand (only available as a gift from Jack on Halloween)

  • 1 Spooky Lantern
  • 3 Star Fragments

Save all of your favorite Halloween costumes to this wand so you’re ready to dress up on a moment’s notice.

There are a few Spooky items that cannot be crafted or purchased from Nook’s Cranny. They are as follows:

Spooky Flooring (only obtained by giving a villager candy during Halloween)

Spooky Rug (only obtained by giving a villager candy during Halloween)

Spooky Wall (only obtained by giving a villager candy during Halloween)

Finally, remember how there are four colors of pumpkin that can grow from a shoot? While crafting these items only requires Orange Pumpkins, customizing these items can be done with the other pumpkin colors. If you prefer your furniture with green, white, or yellow pumpkins, you can make it happen with the color pumpkin of your choice taking the place of the customization kit.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween event ends at midnight, so be sure to keep tricking and treating until you get all of the special items!
