Animal Crossing: New Horizons Guide: Import custom clothes, art with NookLink qr guide

There are plenty of clothing options and accessories to try and buy in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, making it easier than ever to be as fashionable as possible in the adorable life-simulation Nintendo game. If you want to get really original, you can design custom patterns to use for clothes, hats, indoor art, and more. Players can start designing and sharing new designs, but there are already years of designs from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer you can use, too, if you follow this guide utilizing NookLink and QR codes.

Getting set up with NookLink

To scan QR codes from old games into Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll actually need to use a specific smartphone app in order to scan these codes and send them to your game.

To start setting this up, head to the title screen of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and pressing the “–” button to access the Settings menu. Once Tom Nook appears and warns you to be careful when changing settings, go ahead and pick the second option he gives you: “NookLink settings.” The first time you do this, it will enable NookLink capabilities in-game and on the official Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app.

Next, you’ll need to open up a smartphone or tablet and install the Nintendo Switch Online app, which is available on iOS or Android. Once you have that downloaded, sign into your Nintendo Switch account and look for Animal Crossing: New Horizons under the Game-Specific Services tab. Click on that option, and you’ll see a cute NookLink screen pop up that looks exactly like the menu of your NookPhone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There are a lot of useful features here, but right now we want to click on the Designs button in the top right.

Scan a QR code

Once you’re at this screen, you can pull up any QR code from Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Animal Crossing: Happy Home Academy and scan them in to be sent to the latest game. Simple one-image square patterns will only have 1 code to scan, while designs for full custom shirts and dresses will consist of 4 QR codes.

Once you have a design picked and you want to scan it in, just press the “Scan a QR code” button in the app, which will open up a QR-scanning camera window. Line it up with the image of your QR code, and once it’s successfully scanned you’ll see your design show up inside the smartphone app. Pro Designs made up of 4 QR codes need to have all 4 codes scanned back to back before they register in the app. Additionally, the app can only store one scanned design at a time, so if you have dozens of stuff you plan to scan into Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this is going to take some time.

Finding your design in-game

After you scan the design and save it in your Nintendo Switch Online app, boot up Animal Crossing: New Horizons again and open up the Custom Designs app on your NookPhone. In here, press the “+” button to download the design currently scanned and saved to your Nintendo Switch Online app.

After it downloads, you need to pick a slot inside your Custom Designs portfolio to save it to. You get 50 slots for single-code Custom Designs and an additional 50 slots for multi-code Pro Designs. Once your design is saved, you can wear it and display it as you please; you just can’t edit a design you’ve scanned into the game.

With all that said, get out there and start scanning!
