Advance Wars Return Possibly Next on List for Intelligent Systems

It has been quite a long time since Intelligent Systems\’ hit game series Advance Wars deployed a platoon for some pixel destruction but an Advance Wars return is drawing near.  After a somewhat successful launch and delayed delivery to some players in North America, Fire Emblem: Awakening finally arrived to the chagrin of Fire Emblem fan boys and 3DS owners.  Now that Fire Emblem: Awakening is off the list Intelligent Systems may now have time to devote to \”other things\”.

In an interview with 8-4, Masahiro Higuchi, project manager on Awakening, said that Intelligent Systems never wants to pull the plug on something they are totally immersed in.  The last time Advance Wars was seen was back in 2008 with the game Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.  In Days of Ruin most of humanity had been destroyed and everything was dark and filled with ruin.  In the game the player would control one faction of a surviving regime while battling the remnant of another.  Although, at one point the tides change as a sickness scourges the land and the player’s group must try to save survivors while occasionally battling the other group and against another invisible force working in the background to stir things up.

Online multi-player capability was made possible for the first time in Days of Ruin, and online players could battle one on one fighting on random generated maps and at different skill levels if they chose too.  Friends playing online, however, can choose what weather conditions the battle can take place in or how long they want to play.  Local play offered game play for 2-4 players who would each need their own copy of the game and two-player, three-player, and four-player maps were available and could be altered if the players wished.  In single play, players can upload their own created maps and have them rated or even download other maps based on what their approval rating was.

Whether or not the next Advance Wars installment will include these features is anyone’s guess but fans can keep their fingers crossed and get positively excited.  As Higuchi said,

\”We always want to make games that provide a lot of fun to gamers, so if we have the chance, we\’d certainly like to make another [Advance Wars] title.\”
