Nintendo’s back at it again with another Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99 this weekend. It seems Nintendo isn’t quite done celebrating Mario‘s 35th anniversary just yet, as this time, the event is celebrating last month’s launch of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. This event also marks a big milestone for Tetris 99, as this is the 20th Maximus Cup since the game’s launch!
The #Tetris99 20th MAXIMUS CUP event runs from 11pm PT, 3/4 – 10:59pm PT, 3/8! Once you’ve accumulated a total of 100 event points, a new theme will unlock, featuring art, music and Tetrimino designs inspired by the #SuperMario3DWorld + #BowsersFury! @Tetris_Official pic.twitter.com/QknqMuZbDX

The theme this time around is definitely a far cry from earlier themes, opting to use pounding rock music instead of a softer, soothing melody. I really like it though, as it really drives home the intensity of the competition you’re sure to face. Meanwhile, Fury Bowser is fiercely staring you down behind the playing field. As a whole package, this has a lot of potential to be one of my favorite themes thus far.
As always, to unlock the theme, you’ll need to earn 100 points during the course of the event. Points are earned simply by playing online matches, with higher place finishes being worth more points. But at always, you’ll only have a limited time to do so. The 20th Maximus Cup featuring Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury runs this weekend from 2:00 am Eastern on Friday, March 5th through 1:59 am Eastern on Tuesday, March 9th. Make sure to hop on and grab your theme before it’s too late!
