Avert your eyes: Yooka-Laylee to receive 64-Bit Tonic graphical downgrade


Yooka-Laylee wears its Banjo-Kazooie influence on its sleeve. Between character grunts, level design, music, and gameplay, Yooka-Laylee can almost be mistaken for a Nintendo 64 platformer. Thankfully, it’s not quite as hideous as a game from that era, due to it releasing this past year and not in 1996. Developer Playtonic Games, however, is looking to change that.

It hurts to look at

The folks at Playtonic released a YouTube video on their channel today showing a new tonic being added to Yooka-Laylee:

I love how the team pokes fun at the tonic’s ability to turn the world ugly. This 64-bit shader will be available for free soon and was actually part of a Kickstarter stretch goal.

Playtonic explains the tonic thusly:

To activate it, visit your local Vendi and witness as the game resolution crumbles before your eyes! We’ve also capped the frame rate, limited lighting, shadows and shaders and applied a nifty scanline effect, to create the optimum 64-bit illusion. It’s the closest you’ll get to 1998 without chugging Sunny D in a pair of Dr. Martins.

More details will be available soon regarding the filter and its release date. As much as I rag on it, it is admittedly pretty cool and a damn good representation of gaming in the 64-bit era.
