Cutting corners: Super Mario 3D All-Stars’ Sunshine port disappoints with debug cubes

I’m slowly making my way through Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Personally, I like to progress in each of the three titles instead of finishing a game in one go before moving on. Super Mario Sunshine is the platformer I was most looking forward to, seeing as how I never owned a GameCube back in the day. Sadly, it seems the adventure should have gotten a second pass before release because it features some unintended bugs.

According to the website The Cutting Room Floor, debug cubes show up in the Sunshine level “Secret of the Dirty Lake.” This is due to a bug in the Dolphin emulator, which Nintendo presumably used while making this collection. These objects do not appear in the original GameCube release. You can see the difference in a tweet from OatmealDome below:

I can confirm these cubes are present in the Sunshine port. It’s a shame because having these shapes visible takes away from the challenge (though “Secret of the Dirty Lake” is hard enough as is).

I hope Nintendo is aware of this glitch and tries to patch it out. As much as I like the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, it is a pretty barebones port job and could have used a lot of quality of life improvements. It’s disappointing, especially in the age of great remasters like the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
