2021 best multiplayer game of the year winner: Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise was released in March 2021, providing us with an addictive gameplay loop that could be experienced by yourself or online with friends. With the design of Monster Hunter Rise multiplayer, Capcom went to great lengths to reward players no matter their play style, and it paid off. Separate single-player and multiplayer content provide tremendous satisfaction regardless of where you choose to dwell.

Multiplayer in Monster Hunter has always been an essential part of the experience, especially after the release of Monster Hunter: World in 2018, and some of the new mechanics in Rise have only enhanced it. For instance, the introduction of Wirebugs has made encounters with the game’s titular monsters even more chaotic, as multiple players can use unique skills to mount their prey. This can easily become madness, as you will often be facing off against multiple creatures at a time.

Since the launch of Monster Hunter Rise, Capcom has been dedicated to releasing a steady stream of new content, most of which is directly tied into the multiplayer component. With Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak scheduled for release next summer and a PC version on the way, the hunt will continue either by yourself or with a team of skilled companions (albeit without cross-play). We can’t wait to experience what else Capcom has in store for us.

Monster Hunter Rise is our 2021 best multiplayer game of the year on Nintendo Switch at Nintendo Enthusiast. Check back early and often for more award reveals!
